He had major weakness with short pitch bowling because he played on mats in Mumbai all his life batted with still legs and very flashy outside the off technique like sehwag. But unlike sehwag did not take precautions against bouncers and Ambrose and co literally finished his test career when he faced them. Even ganguly had weakness for short pitch bowling and his test record as a result isn't as legendary as his odi record. After kambli, Mumbai coaches take extra precaution to teach their youngsters about backfoot strokes and as a result you have Rohit Sharma and rahane who have excellent pull and hook shots.

Next he misbehaved with women after getting drunk and had poor discipline and wouldn't show up for practice sessions. His best friend Sachin used to bring him back up for odis for a few years when he was the captain and Rahul dravid did not establish himself properly as a hitter in odi cricket.

Essentially ganguly and dravid finished off the careers of kambli and manjrekar and it was good riddance.

Harsha Bhogle video vutnundi about Kamble short one ...it summarizes about sachin and kambli

Kambli all thru his life had success only with his talent...never had to work hard or fight ....got carried away with success and he was indisciplined, head strong and what not....On a rainy day all these count

When he was faced with the first real challenge, he crumbled....his technique for bouncers, offside deliveries was poor and once bowlers knew about it, they could easily take him away...he could have put efforts and fill his shortcoming but never did that..
Ganguly on other hand was less talent but a true fighter....he did overcome or learnt to live with his shortcomings...improvised and fought with real grit and became legendary...today Kambli is remembered only for wrong reasons
