9. Say Anything (1989)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0098258/

Romcom for eyes n ears.. Romance for the heart.. A fine movie.. the plot in parts has been used many a time there after. The film follows the relationship between Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), an average student, and Diane Court (Ione Skye), the valedictorian, immediately after their graduation from high school.
Cameron Crowe, is easily one of the best writer directors..I have experienced.

P.s..No need to say abt the iconic image of..The boombox holding hero.

And the lines u can't forget from Say Anything..

Llyod Dobler says..

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."

10. Chinatown (1974)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0071315/

A 1974 Neo-noir film..a gem from the "truly international filmmaker", Roman polanski... The film was inspired by the California Water Wars, a series of disputes over southern California water at the beginning of the 20th century..Jack Nicholson in his prime's best.. Faye Dunaway.. what a woman...the movie features many elements of noir film..multi layered story.. part mystery n part psychological drama..watch it if u haven't...

N the pretty famous last line..."Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

11. Tootsie (1982)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084805/

A 1982 comedy film by Sydney pollack... Story abt an actor..Michael Dorsey..a perfectionist.. but he doesn't get much roles coz of his attitude... after staying unemployed for a long time... he joins a soap opera dressed as a woman. .. the character becomes a tv sensation nation wide.. how he manages will make u rofl.. the scene where he reveals his true identity.. is so cleverly written n funny at its best...

Our Rajendra prasad's movie "Madam" is heavily inspired from Tootsie... tickle urself watching this...

12. The Apartment (1960)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0053604/

The premise itself is funny n interesting. .."Buddy Boy" Baxter (Jack Lemmon) is a lonely office employee at a national insurance corporation in a high-rise building in New York City. In order to climb the corporate ladder, Buddy Boy allows four company managers to take turns borrowing his apartment for their various extramarital liaisons, which are so noisy that his neighbors assume that he is bringing home different women every night.

Shirley Maclaine stars in this classic comedy..Billy Wilder is one the finest directors of all time... who made many a ageless movie... The Apartment is one such..

13. Thelma & Louise (1991)

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0103074/

Thelma,a passive house wife to a abusing husband and Louise, a single waitress with a traumatic past..one day decide to break out of their mundane normal life and jump in the car and hit the road. Their journey, however, turns into a flight when Louise kills a man who threatens to rape Thelma. They decide to go to Mexico, but soon they are hunted by American police.

Directed by Ridley Scott,a one of a kind film for him.. this feminist adventure comedy is seen by some as anti male.. but I don't think so.. watch it for a refreshing experience. .

Watch out for the infamous(?) climax scene..

14. Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0091167/

A 1986 comedy-drama film which tells the intertwined stories of an extended family over two years that begin and end with a family Thanksgiving dinner. Anyone who ever had feelings for their wife's younger sister would find themselves in the Michael Caine's character.. So beautifully written n executed...

This is the first of the many Woody Allen movies to come in this thread.. man.. wat a genius.. I warn u.. not to watch Woody Allen movies.. if u r novice to intelligent Hollywood cinema.. most of his characters are are pretty complex.. contain references to psychoanalysis. .. and to appreciate the dialogue..u need to have a basic knowledge of World cinema... why all this fuss... coz the movies are worth all this pain..

All though I would say.. Hannah and Her Sisters is somewhat easy to appreciate...n recommended for someone who is new to Woody Allen..

15. Almost Famous (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181875/

I can honestly say.. No other movie I have ever seen fascinated me so much abt the period it was set than this.. I frankly wanted to be a rockstar (or atleast Hippie)in 60s USA after watching this... I fell in love with the Counter culture of the 60s n 70s...the rock bands..free thinking.. love ins.. LSD..Groupies..anti war movements..

Set in 1973 California..The story is abt a teenager William Miller, aspiring rock music journalist...who is recruited by Rolling Stone to follow an upcoming rock band 'Stillwater'..on the band's tour.. he meets some groupies (band aids)..finds a friend in Penny(Kate Hudson).. and what follows is a wonderfully witty coming of age tale of how he confronts life's first problems.. loses his virginity..a lot more.. n completes the coverpage article for Rolling Stone...

Cameron Crowe won Best original Screenplay Academy award for this loosely auto biographical account..

Non-English films

1) Getting Home(chineese) must watch film superb emotional comedy abt a man trying to take back the dead body of a work mate to his family.
2) I SAW THE DEVIL(S.korean 2010). An action-crime-psycho thriller. Must watch film about a Government secret agent trying to take revenge on a serial killer who killed his pregnent girlfriend. But the revenge is in a new form. See one of the best cat'n mouse chases.
3) OLD BOY(S.Korean). Probably the best korean film this bold and extreme cinematic piece is not for the faint hearted

4) INSIDE(French film). A GorryHorror wonder about a pregnant widow being taken hostage by another women

5)BATTLE ROYALE(Japaneese). Hollywood without shame copied this film to make THE HUNGERGAMES.

6)CHILDREN OF HEAVEN(Persian). A simple but heart touching classic

16.Apocalypse Now (1979)

http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0078788/

Vietnam war movies by themselves are a separate genre for me. But no other movie on this war could ever come close to what Apocalypse Now achieved.. US Army Captain Willard is sent on a mission to assasinate a renegade Green Beret Colonel Kurtz(Marlon Brando)..who has, as the army believes, gone insane..As Willard goes deeper into the jungle along the Nyung river..he is overtaken by the mesmerizing power of the jungle n the insanity war brings out in men..

Directed by none other than Francis Ford Coppola.. this movie is a psychological study of men at war.. a movie not to be missed..

N the ever famous line.."I love the smell of napalm in the morning." Talks abt the movie in one line.

17. A River Runs Through It (1992)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0105265/

A period drama by Robert Redford..one of the good early movies of Brad Pitt..told as memoirs of an old man.. Set in and around the city of Missoula in western Montana, the story follows two sons of a Presbyterian minister—one studious and the other rebellious—as they grow up and come of age in a time that roughly spans the Prohibition era (1919–33) in the United States: from World War I to the early days of the Great Depression (1929–41)...All of them love fly fishing...A beautifully shot movie..in scenic locations of Montana n Wyoming.. 2 of the beautiful states closest to nature in USA..

18. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0064115/

One of the best Western films u will ever watch.. Released in 1969.. starring 2 superstars..Paul Newman n Robert Redford..Based loosely on fact, the film tells the story of Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker, known to history as Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and his partner Harry Longabaugh, the "Sundance Kid" (Robert Redford) as they migrate to Bolivia while on the run from the law in search of a more successful criminal career. The climax has the one of the greatest final frames I have ever watched..

19. Groundhog Day (1993)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0107048/

A 1993 comedy starring Bill Murray...a great comedy with an interesting premise..
Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant and egocentric Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again..Few of u may have watched this...for others who haven't seen this.. watch it for a refreshing comedy experience...
