Exclusive: Nagarjuna & Naga Chaitanya talk about ANR in Manam

In an exclusive chat, father-son duo Nagarjuna and Naga Chaitanya talk about working together, sharing a drink, dancing with ANR and more

The drunken revellery in Piyo Piyo Re song from Manam, has been the talk of the town. What was it like to shake a leg with one another?

Nag: Oh! We had a lot of fun shooting for that song. Although our dance moves were not exactly in sync with the song because we had to behave a little bit like drunken guys, it was fun shooting for the club song. More than dancing, the song is all about the bond we share — we gelled well and our on-screen chemistry was perfect.

Chai: Initially, it did feel a bit weird, I must admit. The prospect of drunken dancing itself was a little scary. But I took it in my stride and told myself, 'cool... this is my job as an actor and let's do it'. I was very nervous on the first day of the shoot and could not get my moves right. I had to rehearse a lot and we lost half the day of shooting time. Eventually, dad stepped in and made me comfortable.

Do you guys share a drink together in real life as well?

Chai: Of course, we share a very friendly rapport in our real life too. Both dad and granddad treat me like a friend. Actually, there is a scene where I shove a bottle of beer in dad's mouth. I was a little hesitant initially, but got around to doing it finally. If it was not for the friendly equation that we share, our on-screen chemistry would not have worked out so well.

Nag:We are more like friends. When I used to go to visit my dad, he always offered me a drink and I do the same when Chaitu visits me. There's nothing wrong in that. We might joke about each other, but we never cross our limits.

Who's the best dancer of the lot?

Nag: You people have to decide (laughs). Times have changed from when I entered acting. The present generation of heroes are all very good dancers. Chai and I are unique in our own way. But there's a scene where three of us (including ANR) shake a leg. It is one of the special moments to watch out for!

Chai: Dad is definitely a better dancer, but the song is more about having fun than dancing per se. It's a song both of us had fun shooting. Every moment shooting for Manam has been very special.

Who do you think is easier to work with? Nag or grandfather?

Chai: It was easier working with dad. I'm used to being around dad and he treats me like a friend.Thatha is a legend and I've always looked up to him. Both dad and thatha are unique in their own way and bring to the table very different styles. I'm trying to learn from them and consciously try to be different as well.

Who are you more like — Nag or ANR?

Chai: I think I'm more like my thatha. We both shared a love for travelling and were foodies at heart. We enjoyed pulling each other's leg all the time.He was very approachable and always open to new ideas.

Share some defining memories of working with ANR from the sets of the film...

Chai: In one scene I had to call thatha a 'musaloda' (old man). I just could not get myself to call him that. Sensing my discomfort, thatha tapped me on my shoulder and put me at ease saying 'It's ok...you have to be professional.' Thatha helped me in a couple of crucial scenes as well. I was finding it hard to utter a dialogue...he was quick to chip in and showed me how to emote the dialogue himself. Imagine a 90 year-old nurturing a 20 year old. There's one scene in which thatha had to get up from his chair and walk. It's just a minute long sequence, but how he transformed his look and body language is just phenomenal, and it was an acting master class...

Nag: It's always a learning experience working with dad but this time, his focus was more on Chaitu. I guess he got bored of me (giggles). My dad and Chaitu used to make fun of each other on the sets. I was more like a mediator — trying to come in between them and do things. Chaitu was a bit uncomfortable initially. Acting drunk when drinking coca-cola is never easy, particularly when amidst family members. In one scene, Chaitu had to ask for soda from ANR and he found it difficult to do so initially. But of course, it turned out to be one of the best scenes in the film. Shooting for the entire film was memorable. Particularly the four to five days that three of us shot for, were really special. Not many actors will get the opportunity to work with their father and son. I'm really blessed and grateful to my father for doing it.We made the film with a lot of love and I'm sure everybody will feel the same after watching it.

The trailer of movie suggests that it's going to be high on romance...especially the line 'I love you' is repeated so many times...

Nag: It was told and conveyed in a very beautiful way. The film goes way back from 1920 to 2013. So there is a connection between the people from these generations. I can't reveal too much about that, but I can tell you the dialogue was relevant and kept on purpose.

Chai: I think brand 'Akkineni' itself is synonymous with romance. Thatha acted in some of the greatest romantic films ever made in Telugu cinema, and my dad carried forward his legacy. I also try to look for element of love in the scripts of my films.

How is the family coping with the demise of the patriarch, ANR?

Nag: First of all, we didn't see it (ANR's death) coming. Dad always used to tell me with a smile, "Naaku life lo emi kaavalo...avanni Unnayi raa...nenu anandam gaa vunnanu (Whatever I wanted, I got it and I had everything in my life. I'm contented.) So when he heard about the inevitable, we didn't want to disturb or spoil the mood. The entire family was with him and we never tried to bring up the subject of death. So we tried to enjoy the moments with him, until we got emotional on the day he passed away.

Chai: I think grandad's demise brought our family closer. He has been such a great personality and inspiration to us.We have many sweet memories of him, that has brought us all closer.

Tell us about how you brought Amitabh Bachchan on board...

Nag: My dad always liked Amitabh Bachchan and used to admire him a lot. He would tell me 'are... entha baga chesadura... chakkagavundi kada raa" (Look, how well he did). My dad never missed watching his films. I felt it would be a nice gesture to rope in Big B. It's more like Bachchan's presence in the film makes it all the more special.
