Vishakapatnam, one of the fastest growing cities in India, is the industrial capital of Andhra Pradesh.  Population wise, area wise, and telugu film stamina wise, it is the second biggest center presently, but before 60s, it is relatively a small center.  During 1960s, like many centers, Vizag developed into a very big center.  Right from starting, it is a class center and after mid70s, it even patronized mass films heavily.

The first theater to start with is Saraswathi.  Started in 1949, this theater is one of the toughest theaters to get a good run.  For the most part of time in this theater, films were released thru Vijaya films.

The first 100 days film in Vishakapatnam city among top heros is Legend NTR’s Pelli chesi Choodu (1952).  This film was released one week late on March 7, 1952, in Vizag and had direct 100 days run in Saraswathi theater.

He-Man Shobhan’s Jeevana Jyothi (1975) is the first film to collect 4 lakhs for 100 days in a single theater (Saraswathi) in Vizag City (Rs. 4,17,000).

The next theater in this series is Laxmi.  This theater was started in 1938.  Up to 60s, films were released through Vijaya and Vauhini distributors in this theater.  The first film which was exhibited 20 weeks directly in Vizag city, Dr. ANR’s eternal love story “Devadas,” was exhibited in this theater only.

The next theater in the series is Purna.  This is one of the earliest theaters in Andhra Pradesh which is still exhibiting films.  This is one of the toughest theaters to get a good run.  You can imagine for a period of more than 70 years, this theater has only two direct 100 days films and that too of Dr. ANR’s, the all time number one hero of the center as far as 100 days films and success rate are concerned.

The next theater in the series is Ramakrishna. This theater was started in 1960. This theater has the distinction of the city’s first jubilee film “Lavakusa” and the only white and black jubilee film in the city “Mooga manasulu” (both NTR and ANR first jubilee films were exhibited in this theater). Ramakrishna is also the first theater in which a hero’s one color film and one white and black film were exhibited 100 days in a single year. (1963 – NTR; Color – Lavakusha; White and Black - Narthanashala).

The next theater in the series is Alankar. This theater was started in 1963. This is one of the craziest theaters in Vizag up to late 80s. During the earlier period of time, Navayuga films were released in this theater. Afterwards, during 70s, Laxmi films released their films in this theater. This theater was made A/c in 1987.

Alankar holds the record of exhibiting the first film in Vizag which had 300 days run and the only film (in the entire state) which had 300 days run on hero’s title role (which will be an everlasting record for not only Vizag but also for Andhra Pradesh), Legend NTR’s sensational superhit “Adavi Ramudu.”

Alankar also holds the record of being the only theater in which a hero has 9 direct 100s in a single theater in Vizag city. (Hero – Dr. ANR). Alankar also hold a unique record of a hero (Dr. ANR) having one film title role in White and Black (Dr. Chakravarthy) and one film title role in color (Amarashilpi Jakkanna) exhibited 100 days in the same year. This is the only record of this type.

He-Man Shobhan’s highest direct running (among social films) as a single hero in A.P. is in this theater only (Gorintaku – 147 days).

Redstar Maadala Rangarao's sensational hit film "Yuvatharam Kadilindi" is the first 100 days film in Sri kanya. Seethakoka Chiluka also had 100 days run in this theater. I think even "Ee Charitro Ye siratho" a low budget film also had a very good run of 100-day run (if not at least 84 days run) in this theater. These all before Abhilasha.

Abhilasha has its solo 100-day run as well as state highest run (140 days run up to Roshagadu) in Vizag Sri Kanya A/c. It had a shift 175 days run also in vizag.

Challenge also had similarly its solo 100-day run (40 days houseful) as well as state highest run (106 days up to, I think, Agni Gundam) in Vizag Sri Kanya A/c.

In the period between Khaidi and Pasivadi Pranam, Vizag is the number one center for Chiru. He had good runnings only there.

The next theater is Rajkamal.  This theater was started in 1980 with NSK's Ammayi Mogudu Mamaku Yamudu.  This was one of the largest non-A/c theaters in Andhra Pradesh.

In the initial days, mostly Shayikrishna distributors released their films in this theater.

Hero Krishna's Ooriki Monagadu collected 431000 for first 50 days itself and created non-A/c city record at that time.

Dasari-Vijayashanthi's blockbuster "Osey Ramulamma" had a silver jubilee running in this theater.

The next theater is Jagamdaba 70mm A/c.  One of the most prestigious theaters in the entire Andhra Pradesh, started in 1970, this theater remained very difficult as far as telugu film runnings are concerned.  In its first 18 years, only three films could have a direct 50 days (1973 – Sharada (White & Black) – 58 days; 1978 – Ramakrishnulu – 56; 1986 - Tandra Paparayudu – 56).  Nag’s sensational film “Shiva” in 1989 changed the equation completely with its phenomenal talk.

NTR

NTR is the first hero to have direct 100 days film in Vizag among top heros.  Vizag is one of very few centers wherein NTR has less number of direct 100 days films than ANR. But with K. Raghavendra Rao's combination, NTR created sensation even in this center with massive hits.

NTR is the only hero to have one film that ran for more than 300 days; two films that ran for more than 200 days; three films that ran for 171 days on title role in Vizag.

NTR is the only hero to have three films that ran for 189 days; four films that had 171 days run.

CHIRANJEEVI

Chiru stands third in number of direct 100 days films in Vizag with no immediate threat to his position.  He will reach the second position soon, but his reaching number one position can be known only by time.  Chiru has the distinction of having at least one direct 100 days film in a year right from 1981 to 2004.  (In 1996, he did not have any releases, so he could not have one in that year).
