Kurukshethram film was released on Shobhan’s birthday in the year 1977 and today is its 36th anniversary.

We will see how it fared and how it fought with NTR's mega hit Daana Veera Shoora Karna which was also on the same day.

I have seen many people commenting on Kurukshethram’s box office potential even though they did not know anything about how the film fared and in particular about Shobhan’s performance (as if he is the culprit for the film’s debacle as they think which is first of all not true) even though they did not see the film at least once in their life also.  They are just carried away by the opinions of some others which are carried over for years.  As I have seen 19 times the film in theaters in various centers like Anantapur, Kurnool, Nandyaala, Nandikotkur, Guntakal, and have heard all opinions and public response in theaters and umpteen times in CD, I want to share my experience with one of my most favorite films of Shobhan babu.

Kurukshethram is the first film in my life I waited a lot once I read about it and was very eager to see the film and 7 months between the time I first heard about the film (mid June 1976) and its time of release (mid January 1977) were like “yugas” to me at that time.

I used to wait for a telugu film magazine Cinema Rangam or Cine herald (I do not remember exactly) and eagerly searching for Kurukshethram news, and I was always thrilled by the news of the film.  Especially the Rajasthan schedule coverage was extraordinary.  They used to give the complete cast and crew who worked the film.  The cast would be something like this:

Sri Krishnudu – Shobhan Babu

Arjunudu – Krishna

Karnudu – Krishnamraju

Duryodhanudu – Sathyanarayana

And some other 20 plus actors and actresses and their roles.

I never got tired reading the article umpteen times and I used to be very happy seeing my favorite hero’s name always at the top.

In Rajasthan schedule, all actors were given appropriate lodging facilities depending upon their range.

Only Shobhan babu was given single accommodation with A/c.  Krishna and Vijaya Nirmala another room with A/c and all others were given sharing accommodation according to that magazine.

Let us see comparatively how KK (Kurukshethram) and Daana Veera Shoora Karna (DVSK) performed in Nizam area.

 Nizam

KK - first week 10 theaters; DVSK – 7 theaters

Twin cities

KK – 5 theaters; DVSK – 4 theaters

In the first week, KK collected 1 lakh more than DVSK in the Nizam area alone.

Warangal

Total run

DVSK - 62 days
KK     - 56 days

Direct run

DVSK - Naveen         - 62 days
KK - Durgakalamandir - 42 days + Bhavani (Kazipet) - 14 days

First week

DVSK - Navin & Rajrajeshwari

KK - Durgakalamandir & Alankar (Hanamkonda)

Second week

KK - Durgakalamandir & Alankar (morning shows)
DVSK - Navin

That means KK ran in side theater even in the second week also.

If we see there is no much difference between a superhit film (DVSK) run and a branded-flop-but-not film (KK) in Warangal.  In fact, if we calculate the second week run of KK in the side theater separately,

KK total run will be 63 days whereas DVSK run will be 62 days only.  This is just because of immense craze of Shobhan in warangal at thattime.

HYDERABAD

I week

KK - main theater - Sudarshan 35mm A/c - I week- 28 shows - 88536 (all time single theater state record then)
DVSK - main theater - Shanthi A.c - I week - 28 shows - 82857.40

I week (4 shows)

KK - 3 theaters
DVSK - 1 theater

First 50 days collections

KK - Sudarshan 35mm a/c - Rs. 4,50,000 (State record then)
DVSK - Shanthi A/c          -  Rs. 4,00,000 - theater record (previous record Shobhan's Jeevana Jyothi - 4 lakhs in 51 days)

Direct run

 DVSK – Shanthi A/c – 119 days

KK      - Sudarshan 35mm A/c – 77 days

Total run on multiple shifts

DVSK – 204 days (In some articles, DVSK was written as 250 days in Shanthi theater or in Hyderabad which is not true.  The film had 119 days run in Shanthi theater shifted for Shobhan’s Jeevitha Nauka and on shift ran up to 204 days).

KK - 104 days

Karim Nagar

This was a B center then in which NSB had some wonderful records.

KK – Balakrishna – 28 days & Venkateswara (7 days)

DVSK – 21/1/77 – Rose – 21 days  & Nataraj (7 days)

If you see KK's main theater Balakrishna is bigger and notorious theater for runnings, but still KK had 28 days run whereas DVSK even though with superhit talk had just 21 days run in Rose theater.

If you see even side theaters, KK's side theater Venkateshwara is bigger than DVSK's side theater Nataraj.

Obviously, KK created town record by collecting 72000 in its first week itself and collected 1 lakh gross in just 15 days which was also an alltime town record then.

There are many situtations in this town in which NSB emerged victorious during a tough fight that too with legends and even with films which had better talk than Shobhan's films

First in 1979, undoubdetdly, the year's biggest hit is NTR's Vetagadu. It collected  1 crore in just 52 days only, which was an IH at that time.

It was released on July 5, 1979, but in Karim Nagar, the film was lately released on August 15, 1979 that is on Shobhan's Judagadu release date.  Judagadu had 51 days run  whereas Vetagadu had 37 days run.

In 1981, another miracle happened.

The year 1981 had 2 IHs released. i.e., Premaabhishekam and Kondaveeti Simham, but for Karim Nagar people, IHs did not matter.  They enjoyed Shobhan's Pandanti Jeevitham more than those 2 films.  Kondaveeti Simham 41 days and Premaabhishekam 41 days, but Pandanti Jeevitham 51 days (that too 25 days fulls with 3 shows gap which was a tremendous record then).

Mahaboob Nagar

KK - Late release - 21/1/1977 - Nataraj - 42 days
DVSK - Late release - 17/3/1977 - Hanuman - 36 days

Like Karim Nagar, though not on its range,

even in Mahabub Nagar also NSB films did wonders.

Shobhan's biggest mass hit among color films, Soggadu, had 62 days run in MBNR whereas NTR's biggest mass hit among color films had 55 days run in MBNR.

Even in 1979, NSB's Kartheeka Deepam had 50 days run in Rose theater whereas NTR's and obviously year's biggest hit, Vetagadu, also did not have 50 days run, and Shobhan's Joodhagaadu also fared better than year's second biggest hit, NTR's Driver Ramundu in this town.

To justify the title of this thread, I am going to mention the scenes of KK in which Shobhan exceled.

Sri krishna raayabaaram scene is one of the most famous dramas that people liked from ages.  That drama contains many famous padyams. Unfortunately, in KK, they could not be used  because NTR bought the rights of those and in KK, writer has to use other padyams which are not as popular  and that disappointed audience up to some extent.

Still, Sri Krishna Rayabaaram was shot excellently and Shobhan’s career best dialogues are in this scene.

The dialogues are as follows:

Nee shaasanamee sabhaantharaalamuna kaadhu Suyodhanaa.

Rakthanadhee pravaaha vega prachalitha bhayankara samaraanganamuna

paanchaalee paraabhava jwaalaa parithapthudaina bhima senudu dusta dussa senudi rommu pagilchi rudhira paanam cheyu kshanamuna yemani shaasinchedhavu?

Athiloka paraakramudu arjununi kroora ___ tho prellina karnuni kabandhamu nelapai dorlunapudu yevari naashanamu koraku shaasanam chesedhavu?

Chanda prachanda gadhaabhighaathamulatho vrukodarudu nee ooru bhangam chesinapudu thodalu virigipadi pola kalani lo ekaakivai vilapinchuthoo evarini shaasinchedhevu? yemani shaasinchedhavu?

Maamaa Sathyavathee pouthraa!

Kaaluni dunnapothu chiru gantala mrothalu vinnappudu kanee sampathkara bandhudaina nee suthudiki sandhi vaakyaalu chevikekkavu.

Nee gunde gaalamai aalamu daapurinchinadhi.

Kuru kumaarulaku kaalam daapurinchinadhi.

Padyam:  Aakarnaantha vikrusta vishwa vijayo zha gaandeeva jaaravam baakarnichina maathra dussara duranyaaya prabhuthvammulo bhookampammulu puttu

Braddhali povun dhoortha dussasana praakaarammulu krungi koolu kuru samraat bhaavaanaa harmyamul!

Padyam:  Nindina paapa bhaandavaninbadi braddhalu kaaka podhu

nee pandina dushkriyaa phalamu bhalluna vrellaka podhu

prajwala paandava rosha vishpura dabhanga nishanga sithaamabakaagnulan mandakapovu bhaggumani

KARNA VADHA

This also one good scene in which Rebel star did a wonderful job and NSB’s closeup shots are the best in the film.

SRI KRISHNA:  Maaku telisinadhi maarana dharmamu kanee maarani dharmam kaadhu.

Ainanoo neevepaati dharmamu paatinchithivi?  Siggu bidiyam leka dharmamu maata thala pettuchuntivi?

PADYAM:

Penchana jaalaka aalamuna pekkuru goodi dhananjaathmajun goolchuta dharmamaa?

Koduku kurrala kunthini lakka intilo kaalchuta dharmamaa?

Kanulu gaanaka draupadi cheeralella naadolchuta dharmamaa?

Aladhuradharamandhali gelupu dharmamaa?

Sri Krishna:  Karnaa! Ratha chakram etthagaluguta asaadhyamu.  Ranamu chesedhavaa? Tholagipoyedhavaa?

Sri Krishna:  Sankochinchaku arjunaa!  Aagarbha shathruvu karnuni thakshaname antham cheyi.

Arjuna:  Virathunni ella champamantaavu baavaa?

Sri Krishna:  Hmm! Nee kumaarudu abhimanyuni virathunni chese champaaru.  Aanaadu kuru sabhalo neevu chesina pratigna gurthuku tecchuko.  Adharmaaniki adharmame samaadhaanam.  Anumaaninchaka ventane antham cheyi.

Not even Jamuna got a room with AC? I'm surprised. She was one of the few actresses who had crossed over into mainstream Hindi cinema for a bit. Vijay Nirmala must have gotten top billing in the credits then.

Even so, you'd think as a film industry veteran she'd be shown some respect. I can't believe how poor the accommodations were for the stars of such an allegedly big budget film.

When I started this thread, one of my friends in other DB, has started a thread taking a Shobhan's guest film and stating Shobhan's vishwarupam.  For him and like-minded people, I am uploading video clips of Kurukshetram scenes to justify this thread title.

To start with see one of the best shot scenes of the film Agra pooja.

Hear the Shobhan song in Kurukshethram film which was cut in the video,

This song is the first song of the film, though not as popular as the other songs is also a good composition by S Rajesjwara Rao and if u hear multiple times, you will like it.
