The Andhra Pradesh Education department issued G.O No. 29 on Rationalisation of schools across the state.

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Education department issued G.O No. 29 on Rationalisation of schools across the state. This move is facing severe criticism. Around 9,000 schools with poor strength were on the verge of closure with the recent GO. The schools’ education department issued the directions for allocation of teachers in government schools across 13 districts.

According to the GO. No. 29, primary schools with less than 20 enrolments, Upper Primary schools with less than 40 enrolments and High schools with less than 50 enrolments within 1 Km radius could be considered as Non-viable and consolidated with nearby existing schools. This will result in closure of around 6,500 primary schools, 2,500 upper primary schools and 50 high schools across 13 districts of AP.

The district-level rationalisation committee under the chairmanship of the District collector, will be formed with five members to take up the rationalisation process. Rationalisation is a big threat to government schools in Guntur district. Nearly 450 schools would be closed in Capital district, Guntur. The schools with low admissions would be merged into the nearby schools and those schools would be closed.

Educationists and teachers’ unions are alleging that the government has  brought this GO to weaken government schools as a part of their plan to encourage corporate education.

I did not open the link to look at the date, but this process started or was thought over during the TDP government in 2016. I attended one of the events in LA, where I believe commissioner came along with Ganta Srinivas Rao and hosted meeting.  It was to raise money to digitize the government schools.  I raised this point there.  Closure of schools will be an issue as it will raise sentiments of villages.  Instead, Government should make 3 villages as Unit and allocate 3 levels of schools like primary school to one, Secondary and high to other villages and provide transport between 3 villages.  This will help in increasing the strength of the schools and make sure that facilities are used properly.

I even told that Government schools have luxory of play grounds and it would make sense for them to rent those to private schools and use the funds to increase the standards of the government schools.  My friends are active in school development and work extensively through a program called Snehahastaalu.

Outright closing of schools is plain stupid.  discuss and diverge should be the policy going forward.

Now that i opened the link, it suits the timing, i discussed with minister and chairman.  It should be done, irrespective, as i know schools which has less than 50 kids studying too.  It does not make any sense to have teachers teach 7 or 8 students.  Government should re-work on the design process.
